FAQs

Arctic Sun Heating & Cooling

  • Should I cover my air conditioner unit in the winter?

At Arctic Sun Heating & Cooling, we advise against covering your outdoor air conditioning unit. While covers are available to prevent leaves and debris from entering, they can cause significant damage if the system is accidentally turned on. This could lead to outdoor fan failure or even compressor damage. With regular maintenance, your air conditioner should function properly without a cover.
  • How often should I check my air filters?

At Arctic Sun Heating & Cooling, we see a lot of HVAC problems that stem from poor air filter maintenance. The simple act of changing your filter can save you from countless headaches, so you should never overlook this critical detail. The frequency of air filter changes depends on various factors. You have to consider how many people are in the home, nearby construction areas, and any pets living in the home. As a general rule, we recommend replacing 1-inch disposable filters monthly. For 90-day filters, we suggest changing them every two months, as they often don't last the full 90 days.
  • When should I have my furnace or air conditioner serviced?

We recommend scheduling maintenance for your HVAC equipment twice a year: once in the spring and once in the fall. This regular servicing helps ensure optimal performance and efficiency of your heating and cooling systems. The team at Arctic Sun Heating & Cooling can provide the service your unit needs.
  • My air conditioning bills are high. Is there something I can do?

There are several steps you can take to reduce your air conditioning costs. First, keep doors and windows closed to prevent the escape of air. You can also do this by sealing leaks in your ducts and outer openings. Internally, make sure the unit has a clean air filter. The coils and blower motor need to be cleaned as well, and you should make sure your refrigerant is properly charged. This is all part of annual furnace and air conditioner maintenance. This promotes better functionality, which can reduce your energy bills. Finally, make sure your thermostat is at a reasonable temperature. You can control how much or how little you run your system, and even a change of a few degrees can have a demonstrable impact on your energy bills.
